Where did they originate? Why do they have unique looks? Why are they endangered?<\/p>\n<p>Those are just some of the questions that science has helped answer. We have featured a wide array of blogs examining the distinct situations and peculiarities of animal breeds all over the world. If you missed them the first time, here&rsquo;s a list of what we&rsquo;ve covered (so far):<\/p>\n<p>DNA testing has helped us understand the heredity and <a href=\"\/pages\/community\/blog\/post\/testing-arabian-horses-and-the-wild-horses-of-north-carolina\" target=\"_blank\">lineage of Arabian horses<\/a>&nbsp;and the wild horses of North Carolina&rsquo;s Outer Banks.<\/p>\n<p>Another majestic animal, the <a href=\"\/pages\/community\/blog\/post\/the-bison-that-grand-genetically-imperiled-ruler-of-america-s-iconic-landscapes\" target=\"_blank\">North American bison<\/a>&nbsp;has been brought back from the brink of extinction. DNA studies, however, indicate that today&rsquo;s wild herds descend from only a handful of earlier survivors.<\/p>\n<p>In southern California, <a href=\"\/pages\/community\/blog\/post\/pretty-threatened-southern-california-s-mountain-lions-face-serious-long-term-survival-challenges\" target=\"_blank\">mountain lions face serious long-term survival challenges<\/a>. Hemmed in by freeways and development, they&rsquo;re in need of an injection of genetic diversity.<\/p>\n<p>New DNA-based techniques are offering insight into the <a href=\"\/pages\/community\/blog\/post\/dna-offers-insight-into-grizzly-bear-recovery-and-possible-genetic-isolation\" target=\"_blank\">recovery of the grizzly bear<\/a>, as well as possible genetic isolation.<\/p>\n<p>DNA studies are also being used to show the <a href=\"\/pages\/community\/blog\/post\/dna-studies-show-connections-between-grizzly-bears-and-polar-bears\" target=\"_blank\">connections between grizzly bears and polar bears<\/a>&nbsp;&hellip; and maybe even yetis!<\/p>\n<p>Have you <a href=\"\/pages\/community\/blog\/post\/from-the-coast-of-california-a-startling-discovery-blue-eyed-genetically-mutant-coyotes\" target=\"_blank\">ever seen a blue-eyed coyote<\/a>? A genetic blip has resulted in some coyotes in California having blue eyes. The distinct look, however, comes with a drawback.<\/p>\n<p>Threatened with extinction and tucked away in mountain highlights, rare <a href=\"\/pages\/community\/blog\/post\/rare-mexican-wolf-packs-augmented-with-captive-raised-pups-to-boost-genetic-variability\" target=\"_blank\">Mexican wolfpacks are being augmented<\/a>&nbsp;with captive-raised pups to boost genetic viability.<\/p>\n<p>DNA research on biodiversity has the potential to provide huge impacts on our understanding, and hopefully, our ability to preserve and protect the environment around us.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Exploration and examination of DNA, as well as the use of a wide array of scientific applications, has allowed biologists to learn more about the wildlife around us.
