Where on a nucleotide are Cy dyes attached?

5′ and 3' Cy dyes are attached to the hydroxyl group of the ribose via a phosphodiester bond.

Internal Cy dyes are attached to the backbone via the phosphodiester bonds of the bases between which the dyes occur.
