IDT is pleased to introduce our first Synthetic Biology Grant Program call for entries. The IDT Synthetic Biology Grant Program aims to empower the next generation of world-changing companies seeking to make a positive impact in the fields of human health, sustainable manufacturing, or humanitarian causes. If you are a small US-based startup looking for a way to jump start your business plan, we invite you to apply.

Finalist: The grant winner will receive 100,000 bp of DNA provided as gBlocks® Gene Fragments* (or the equivalent value in other products, including Megamer™ Single-Stranded DNA Fragments, and custom Gene or MiniGene™ Synthesis), along with a published company profile on synbiobeta.com, and the opportunity to present on the main stage at SynBioBeta SF 2017.

Runner-Up: A runner-up will be granted 50,000 bp of DNA provided as gBlocks® Gene Fragments* (or the equivalent value in other products, including Megamer™ Single-Stranded DNA Fragments, and custom Gene or MiniGene™ Synthesis), along with a published company profile on synbiobeta.com.

Eligibility requirements

The grant is open to US-based organizations that have been in business for less than 5 years, have fewer than 50 employees, and have not completed any fundraising beyond Series A. Products from IDT must be an essential component of the company’s business plan. The company’s plan must be in the field of human health, sustainable manufacturing, or humanitarian causes. Applicants must grant IDT the ability to use any materials received by IDT during the grant program for sales and marketing purposes. Applicants must be granted the authority by their organization to agree to this condition. Applicants agree to comply with all applicable laws, statutes, ordinances, and regulations regarding applicant’s grant proposal. The grant award offer is void where prohibited. IDT reserves the right to limit or cancel the grant program at IDT’s discretion. IDT account registration is required.

Application guidelines

Applications must be submitted in presentation format using no more than 10 slides. One slide must contain an executive summary (limit: 300 words).

Please include the following information in your application:

  • State your company’s mission statement
  • Describe the vision and objectives of your company
  • Describe how your project will impact the world in human health, sustainable manufacturing, or humanitarian causes
  • Highlight current facilities and resources of your company
  • Describe how your company will benefit should you be awarded the grant prize

Judging criteria

  • Impact/benefit to humanity
  • Innovation
  • Feasibility (technical and commercial)
  • Must include use of gBlocks® Gene Fragments, Megamer™ Single-Stranded DNA Fragments, or custom Genes or MiniGene Synthesis
  • Bonus points will be given to applicants from the state of Iowa

Award announcement

Winners will be directly notified the week of September 25, 2017, and will be publicly announced in October, at SynBioBeta SF 2017.

* The awards are calculated based on purchasing 1000 bp gBlocks® Gene Fragments; selecting other products may reduce the total number of bases below the described 100,000 or 50,000 bp awards. See rules for details.

Applicants are responsible for their own travel and conference admission. If applicants are unable to attend SynBioBeta SF 2017, IDT will present a company profile for the winner.

gBlocks® Gene Fragments are double-stranded, sequence-verified DNA molecules of 125–3000 bp in length.

Megamer™ Single-Stranded DNA Fragments are single-stranded, sequence-verified DNA molecules ranging in length from 201–2000 bases.

Genes and MiniGene Synthesis products are constructed using high quality oligonucleotides and provided in a plasmid cloning vector. All inserts are sequence verified on both strands.
